CORONATION

Coronation is a photographic series exploring the ways in which many of the facades of St Helier’s commercial buildings, such as shops, pubs, and office spaces, were decorated in an array of Union Jacks, Jersey flags, decorations, and bunting during the coronation of King Charles III in May 2023.

The series visually examines how various businesses chose to mark this historically significant occasion through a similar approach, albeit often with very different visual results. By framing each building facade in a neutral, objective way, the photographs allow the designs and decorations to speak for themselves.

As a result, the photographs act as firsthand visual evidence of how businesses chose to mark this occasion through the act of playfully decorating their shop facades, a practice that is otherwise fairly uncommon in Jersey.
