LIBERATION DAY

Liberation Day is an ongoing photographic series made in Jersey each year since 2022. Photographed on 9 May, during the Island's annual Liberation Day celebrations, the work documents the events held each year to commemorate Jersey's liberation in 1945, following five years of occupation by Nazi Germany.

Focusing on St Helier, where many of the official celebrations take place, the series combines observational portraits with photographs of the ceremonies, traditions, and public gatherings that unfold throughout the town. Moving between formal acts of remembrance and informal moments of celebration, the photographs provide a visual record of the people, traditions, and shared experiences that continue to make Liberation Day an important and joyous occasion for the island.

In essence, the series considers how remembrance is sustained through ceremony, celebration, and community spirit.
